The Scientific Information Port (PIC) is a scientific-technological centre specialising in data-intensive research operated through a collaboration agreement between two public research institutions: the IFAE and the CIEMAT, with the additional support of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). The PIC was created in 2003 with a dual mission: first, to fulfil Spain’s commitment to provide a first-class (Tier1) data processing centre for CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). , and second, to apply the experience gained to develop scalable data analysis services for experiments in multiple disciplines where large volumes of data are to be analysed.
